You know, life happens. Specific events turn out badly, we are hurt by strangers, by family, or by accident. Things occur that outstrip our ability to feel safe in the world.
Trauma is a normal response to an abnormal event. But knowing that fact itself doesn't guarantee healing. Talking to someone in a trusted and safe environment can be the catalyst to recover from, and even transcend, the trauma that holds us back today.
My clients find that safe environment in our sessions, and in themselves. We talk about and through the events that have left them wounded, fearful, and stuck. Together we develop coping strategies and learn to recognize the flashpoints that can trigger negative emotions and behaviors.
Trauma also harms us by compromising our self-care. As we treat the trauma, we support the body's health, and the body's health supports the mind. The Buddhist tradition calls the body the throne of the mind, and I make sure my patients have a dependable, healthy body in which to find and cultivate peace of mind.
